A witness from God can be relied upon. As you read our thoughts, beliefs, and experiences, we invite you to obtain a witness for yourself. If something we say or imply does not ring true, then you should feel no obligation to accept it. Life is an individual and unique journey with God. Although we can help and encourage each other, we need to be careful not to come between God and another person.

The Law of Sacrifice

The sixth lecture contained in the Lectures on Faith by the Prophet Joseph Smith is enlightening and teaches the importance of sacrifice of all earthly things and how sacrifice is necessarily required to produce the faith necessary unto life and salvation. Here are the words of the sixth lecture:

1 Having treated, in the preceding lectures, of the ideas of the character, perfections and attributes of God, we next proceed to treat of the knowledge which persons must have, that the course of life which they pursue is according to the will of God, in order that they may be enabled to exercise faith in him unto life and salvation.

2 This knowledge supplies an important place in revealed religion; for it was by reason of it that the ancients were enabled to endure as seeing him who is invisible. An actual knowledge to any person that the course of life which he pursues is according to the will of God, is essentially necessary to enable him to have that confidence in God, without which no person can obtain eternal life. It was this that enabled the ancient saints to endure all their afflictions and persecutions, and to take joyfully the spoiling of their goods, knowing, (not believing merely,) that they had a more enduring substance (Hebrews 10:34).

3 Having the assurance that they were pursuing a course which was agreeable to the will of God, they were enabled to take, not only the spoiling of their goods, and the wasting of their substance, joyfully, but also to suffer death in its most horrid forms; knowing, (not merely believing,) that when this earthly house of their tabernacle was dissolved, they had a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens (2 Corinthians 5:1).

4 Such was and always will be the situation of the saints of God, that unless they have an actual knowledge that the course that they are pursuing is according to the will of God, they will grow weary in their minds and faint; for such has been and always will be the opposition in the hearts of unbelievers and those that know not God, against the pure and unadulterated religion of heaven, (the only thing which ensures eternal life,) that they will persecute, to the uttermost, all that worship God according to his revelations, receive the truth in the love of it, and submit themselves to be guided and directed by his will, and drive them to such extremities that nothing short of an actual knowledge of their being the favorites of heaven, and of their having embraced that order of things which God has established for the redemption of man, will enable them to exercise that confidence in him necessary for them to overcome the world, and obtain that crown of glory which is laid up for them that fear God.

5 For a man to lay down his all, his character and reputation, his honor and applause, his good name among men, his houses, his lands, his brothers and sisters, his wife and children, and even his own life also, counting all things but filth and dross for the excellency of the knowledge of Jesus Christ, requires more than mere belief, or supposition that he is doing the will of God, but actual knowledge: realizing, that when these sufferings are ended he will enter into eternal rest; and be a partaker of the glory of God.

6 For unless a person does know that he is walking according to the will of God, it would be offering an insult to the dignity of the Creator, were he to say that he would be a partaker of his glory when he should be done with the things of this life. But when he has this knowledge, and most assuredly knows that he is doing the will of God, his confidence can be equally strong that he will be a partaker of the glory of God.

7 Let us here observe, that a religion that does not require the sacrifice of all things, never has power sufficient to produce the faith necessary unto life and salvation; for from the first existence of man, the faith necessary unto the enjoyment of life and salvation never could be obtained without the sacrifice of all earthly things: it was through this sacrifice, and this only, that God has ordained that men should enjoy eternal life; and it is through the medium of the sacrifice of all earthly things, that men do actually know that they are doing the things that are well pleasing in the sight of God. When a man has offered in sacrifice all that he has, for the truth's sake, not even withholding his life, and believing before God that he has been called to make this sacrifice, because he seeks to do his will, he does know most assuredly, that God does and will accept his sacrifice and offering, and that he has not nor will not seek his face in vain. Under these circumstances, then, he can obtain the faith necessary for him to lay hold on eternal life.

8 It is in vain for persons to fancy to themselves that they are heirs with those, or can be heirs with them, who have offered their all in sacrifice, and by this means obtained faith in God and favor with him so as to obtain eternal life, unless they in like manner offer unto him the same sacrifice, and through that offering obtain the knowledge that they are accepted of him.

9 It was in offering sacrifices that Abel, the first martyr, obtained knowledge that he was accepted of God. And from the days of righteous Abel to the present time, the knowledge that men have that they are accepted in the sight of God, is obtained by offering sacrifice: and in the last days, before the Lord comes, he is to gather together his saints who have made a covenant with him by sacrifice. Psalms 50:3-5: Our God shall clime, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him. He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people. Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant unto me by sacrifice.

10 Those, then, who make the sacrifice will have the testimony that their course is pleasing in the sight of God, and those who have this testimony will have faith to lay hold on eternal life, and will be enabled, through faith, to endure unto the end, and receive the crown that is laid up for them that love the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. But those who do not make the sacrifice cannot enjoy this faith, because men are dependent upon this sacrifice in order to obtain this faith; therefore, they cannot lay hold upon eternal life, because the revelations of God do not guarantee unto them the authority so to do; and without this guarantee faith could not exist.

11 All the saints of whom we have account in all the revelations of God which are extant, obtained the knowledge which they had of their acceptance in his sight, through the sacrifice which they offered unto him: and through the knowledge thus obtained, their faith became sufficiently strong to lay hold upon the promise of eternal life, and to endure us seeing him who is invisible; and were enabled, through faith, to combat the powers of darkness, contend against the wiles of the adversary, overcome the world, and obtain the end of their faith, even the salvation of their souls.

12 But those who have not made this sacrifice to God, do not know that the course which they pursue is well pleasing in his sight; for whatever may be their belief or their opinion, it is a matter of doubt and uncertainty in their mind; and where doubt and uncertainty is, there faith is not, nor can it be. For doubt and faith do not exist in the same person at the same time. So that persons whose minds are under doubts and fears cannot have unshaken confidence, and where unshaken confidence is not, there faith is weak, and where faith is weak, the persons will not be able to contend against all the opposition, tribulations and afflictions which they will have to encounter in order to be heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ Jesus; and they will grow weary in their minds, and the adversary will have power over them and destroy them.

Ceremony of Recognition and Witnessing

In 3 Nephi Chapter 11, we have the account when the Father introduces His Son to the Nephites in the land of Bountiful, Jesus Christ appears, and the people are asked to perform a ceremony of recognition and witnessing.

“And behold, the third time they did understand the voice which they heard; and it said unto them: Behold my Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, in whom I have glorified my name—hear ye him. And it came to pass, as they understood they cast their eyes up again towards heaven; and behold, they saw a Man descending out of heaven; and he was clothed in a white robe; and he came down and stood in the midst of them; and the eyes of the whole multitude were turned upon him, and they durst not open their mouths, even one to another, and wist not what it meant, for they thought it was an angel that had appeared unto them. And it came to pass that he stretched forth his hand and spake unto the people, saying: Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world. And behold, I am the light and the life of the world; and I have drunk out of that bitter cup which the Father hath given me, and have glorified the Father in taking upon me the sins of the world, in the which I have suffered the will of the Father in all things from the beginning. And it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words the whole multitude fell to the earth; for they remembered that it had been prophesied among them that Christ should show himself unto them after his ascension into heaven. And it came to pass that the Lord spake unto them saying: Arise and come forth unto me, that ye may thrust your hands into my side, and also that ye may feel the prints of the nails in my hands and in my feet, that ye may know that I am the God of Israel, and the God of the whole earth, and have been slain for the sins of the world. And it came to pass that the multitude went forth, and thrust their hands into his side, and did feel the prints of the nails in his hands and in his feet; and this they did do, going forth one by one until they had all gone forth, and did see with their eyes and did feel with their hands, and did know of a surety and did bear record, that it was he, of whom it was written by the prophets, that should come.” (3 Nephi 11:6-15)

From the Book, “The Second Comforter – Conversing with The Lord Through the Veil” on Pages 170-171 we read:

“He tells them to come, one by one, to feel the wounds in his side, and hands, and feet. One by one is how he directs. No person who is present is to have this witness through another. All of them are to be equally qualified as Witnesses of Him. there is nothing vicarious about this meeting. They are asked to perform a ceremony of recognition and witnessing. They first feel his side. To do this they must embrace the Lord, for you cannot feel his side without embracing Him. Embracing Him is an essential part of the ceremony of recognition. Ceremony and holiness are connected with each other. Recognize you are reading about a ceremony, as all encounters involved with God are in one way or another.

Having embraced the Lord and felt his side, the witnesses are asked to take a step back and feel His hands. Feeling the Lord's hands is also a part of the ceremonial process. At an arm's length, holding his hands, you feel the marks of the nails.

Then, having touched the secret emblems of the Atonement, you are permitted to kneel and feel the prints in His feet. This part of the ceremony is the easiest for men to observe. For kneeling at his feet is the natural position for anyone who has witnessed for themselves the price He paid on their behalf and feels the love within Him.

This is ceremony, and this is ritual, but it employs such rich witnesses in the body of the Lord as to be convincing beyond all doubt that He is the Christ, the Anointed One, the Deliverer, and the Holy One of Israel!

Every person will be given the same experience at some point as the scriptures record in 2 Nephi 9:41: "O then, my beloved brethren, come unto the Lord, the Holy One. Remember that his paths are righteous. Behold, the way for man is narrow, but it lieth in a straight course before him, and the keeper of the gate is the Holy One of Israel; and he employeth no servant there; and there is none other way save it be by the gate; for he cannot be deceived, for the Lord God is his name.” This statement by Nephi concerns the final judgement. But it needn't be delayed. He is the One through whom salvation comes. And He employs no servant to do these things. This encounter can be here, now, in mortality.”

The scriptures are loaded with testimonies of individuals who actually experience this type of encounter with God ... while still mortal!

In the Book of Mormon, you only need to read 5-6 verses to find the account where Lehi prayed unto the Lord and received an answer. There came a pillar of fire and he did quake and tremble. Lehi was overcome with the spirit, carried away in a vision, saw the heavens open, and saw and heard much.

“Thus I, Abraham, talked with the Lord, face to face, as one man talketh with another; and he told me of the works which his hands had made; And he said unto me: My son, my son (and his hand was stretched out), behold I will show you all these. And he put his hand upon mine eyes, and I saw those things which his hands had made, which were many; and they multiplied before mine eyes, and I could not see the end thereof.” (Abraham 3:11-12)

“And when he had said these words, behold, the Lord showed himself unto him, and said: Because thou knowest these things ye are redeemed from the fall; therefore ye are brought back into my presence; therefore I show myself unto you. Behold, I am he who was prepared from the foundation of the world to redeem my people. Behold, I am Jesus Christ. I am the Father and the Son. In me shall all mankind have life, and that eternally, even they who shall believe on my name; and they shall become my sons and my daughters.” (Ether 3:13-14)

I don't think it is wise to allow another person to stand between you and Christ in any form or fashion, nor to be deceived into believing that this connection, embrace, and ceremony with Christ is merely meant for afterlife. You needn't wait until after death to meet Christ face to face, be redeemed by the Redeemer, and receive the testimony of Jesus, promising you eternal life, by His own voice.

Receive First, Then Teach

“Writing the words of eternal life require someone to have eternal life. They can still be mortal, but they need the promise of eternal life. So I suppose the Lord’s admonition: “Seek first the kingdom of God, and all things shall be added thereto” really answers the question. Or as told to Hyrum: “Seek not to declare my word, but first seek to obtain my word.” The one must precede the other. At least the statement of the Lord to His disciples, and the revelation to Hyrum Smith seem to indicate as much.” DS 2-9-10

Would it be logical to assume that someone, who does not live the gospel, has the ability to teach it? Could a man, who has not repented, received baptism, and the gift of the Holy Ghost, properly teach and bear witness of the doctrine of Christ? Is it possible for you to teach anything with authority, if you have not obtained it? Certainly something to ponder and worth considering.

On the Road to Eternal Life

We were having our morning prayer, and John was asking and pleading with the Lord, “Open my eyes so I can see. Please show me my sins so I can repent. What do I lack? I know I am sinful and full of unbelief Moroni 7:37. I don’t know what all of my false beliefs are; teach me. I want to see your face and be in your presence” D&C 93:1. I’ve heard John confess his weaknesses many times before the Lord. He has a pure heart and a great desire to come unto the Lord. The thought came to me, “Pray that John will be patient with the process.”

Then an analogy came to mind:

Once in a while, we go to Grandma’s. The children are excited to arrive and don’t like waiting two hours to get there. Along the trip we hear things like, “When are we going to be at Grandma’s house? How many more hours? Are we almost there? What mile marker is Grandma’s exit? How much longer? What time is it?” We answer the questions the best we can, but sometimes the questions keep coming. After a while, the questions become tiresome.

Without added delays, it takes about two hours to get to Grandma’s. There’s nothing wrong with the van, the road is in good condition, progress is being made, and we’re going in the right direction. But it still takes two hours to get to her house. The Lord wants us to ask him lots of questions, but not the same ones over and over and over and over again. Once he’s given an answer, we need to be content with His timetable. He’s leading us just as fast as our spirit will go. Impatience with our progress actually gets in the way and is frustrating.

Patience is not to be confused with complacency or following bad directions. There are many things we can do to postpone the ride. Some fail to arrive because they don’t even decide to make the journey.

When going somewhere we’ve never been, we can get lost if we follow the instructions of one who’s never been there. Looking at a reliable road map can give us an idea about where we’re headed and what can be expected.

Blindness can also cause big problems. Without my glasses, I can’t even see the road signs that have been provided. If we don’t pay attention to the signs, we might head in the wrong direction.

There are other things we can do to lengthen out the trip: extra potty breaks, stopping to play at the park, going to the store, eating at a restaurant, etc. Unnecessary detours can also waste valuable time.

The Holy Ghost is like a GPS (global positioning system - a form of satellite navigation). No matter where we are, we can type in the final address. We might be minutes, hours, or days from our destination. He can see our position and will guide us. There might be long stretches of monotonous scenery, steep inclines, busy cities, winding country roads, sharp turns, and dark nights. He’s always present giving us instructions as needed.

If the radio is too loud or we’re not paying attention, we might not hear him and miss a critical exit or turn. When we miss a turn, the GPS lets us know. The quicker we realize our mistake, the sooner we can get back on track. He calculates the necessary course corrections to get us heading in the right direction again. We might even see scenery and experience roads that were not part of the original travel plans. If, in our arrogance, we turn off the GPS thinking we know where we’re going, we can get really lost.

So, turn on the GPS, type in the address, open your ears and eyes, and get ready for the ride of your life.

As I shared the analogy that was coming to mind, John smiled with tears in his eyes and said, “Ya, that’s it.”

Child’s Sincere Temple Question, Part 7 Conclusion

Joseph Smith taught, “Then I would exhort you to go on and continue to call upon God until you make your calling and election sure for yourselves, by obtaining this more sure word of prophecy, and wait patiently for the promise until you obtain it, etc. Then, having this promise sealed unto them, it was an anchor to the soul, sure and steadfast.” TPJS pages 298-299, Ether 12:4

Joseph Smith asks some soul searching questions, “I want to ask this congregation, every man, woman and child, to answer the question in their own heart, what kind of a being God is? Ask yourselves; turn your thought into your hearts, and say if any of you have seen, heard, or communed with him. This is a question that may occupy your attention for a long time. I again repeat the question--What kind of a being is God? Does any man or woman know? Have any of you seen him, heard him, or communed with him? Here is the question that will, peradventure, from this time henceforth occupy your attention. The Scriptures inform us that "This is life eternal that they might know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent."

“If any man does not know God, and inquires what kind of a being he is,--if he will search diligently his own heart--if the declaration of Jesus and the apostles be true, he will realize that he has not eternal life; for there can be eternal life on no other principle.” TPJS pages 343-344

I am realizing that if I want eternal life, then I need to rend the veil, connect to heaven, and receive the Father and the Son.

Even if the fullness of the priesthood was taken from the saints and all that remains is the lesser priesthood, there is still a wonderful opportunity to connect with heaven. The Aaronic priesthood holds the keys of the ministering of angels and the preparatory gospel. D&C 13:1

Angels are connected with heaven and can help us connect too. Christ sends angels to minister to those who have strong faith and a firm mind. Angels are sent to declare the conditions of repentance. They declare the word of Christ unto the chosen vessels of the Lord, that they may bear testimony of him Moroni 7:30-31. Angels can teach us His doctrine and point us to Jesus Christ, who is our Redeemer. Then Christ will tell us what to do next. 2 Nephi 32:3,6

It is only through Christ, not men or organizations, that we are able to obtain forgiveness and be saved Mosiah 16:13, Helaman 5:9. He is the keeper of the gate and employs no servant there as a doorman 2 Nephi 9:41. It is reassuring and comforting that I can trust the One who completely knows my heart. The keeper of the gate cannot be deceived.

Religious leaders cannot subordinate God and dictate the salvation or damnation of another. They may declare judgment of men and claim the authority of God to do so, but heaven does not respect or honor men exercising priestcrafts. D&C 33:4, D&C 121:37 “And I want you to know that God, in the last days, while certain individuals are proclaiming his name, is not trifling with you or me.” TPJS page 347

No earthly authority, whether Pope, Priest, or Prophet, can stand between God and man. True messengers do not “set themselves up for a light unto the world, that they may get gain and praise of the world” 2 Nephi 26:29. A messenger from God never claims authority to save but points others to Christ. They come with a message, but will not allow you to worship or honor them. Revelation 22:8-9, 1 Nephi 17:55

Jesus has his own testimony. We must receive the testimony of Jesus to obtain salvation D&C 76:51-70. What is the testimony of Jesus? It is His testimony declaring to us that our sins are forgiven, declaring that we have been blessed with the promise of eternal life Enos 1:5-6.This is the more sure word of prophecy and only Christ provides it. D&C 131:5, Revelation 19:10

“Salvation cannot come without revelation; it is in vain for anyone to minister without it. No man is a minister of Jesus Christ without being a Prophet. No man can be a minister of Jesus Christ except he has the testimony of Jesus; and this is the spirit of prophecy. Whenever salvation has been administered, it has been by testimony. Men of the present time testify of heaven and hell, and have never seen either; and I will say that no man knows these things without this.” TPJS page 160

Whether or not you think the institutional church lost the fulness of the priesthood is for you to decide. Either way, it’s not going to hold you back. The fulness is still available to all. It cannot and does not come from men. It comes directly from God to an individual.

Many eternal truths and keys to salvation have been preserved through temple ordinances. After they were revealed through the prophet Joseph Smith, some of the temple ceremonies were altered. Even during my own lifetime, I have witnessed changes made to the ordinances. Isaiah 24:5

Nevertheless, the ceremonies still capture much light, portray a walk back into the presence of God, and preserve eternal truths. The ceremonies are presented in symbols and testify of the actual return to Him. They are not the real thing, just a blueprint, pattern, and model of the process. It’s a dry run. The temple ordinances are designed to invite the participants to come unto God.

The ordinances that many are familiar with today are performed by men and not performed by God. You are invited to experience the real thing. This happens when the veil of unbelief is parted, the heavens open, you actually converse with the Lord through the veil, and enter into His presence.

As we obey His commandments, make necessary sacrifices, follow the gospel of Jesus Christ, keep the law of chastity, and consecrate our lives to Him, further instruction and light will surely come. It can be anticipated and expected. “That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.” D&C 50:24 As we receive and embrace light, we will naturally receive more sacred light and knowledge from true messengers. They come from the presence of God, bring His message, and invite us to come unto Christ.

Now if your daughter were to ask you these questions, how would you answer? “Dad, I wonder if the temple ordinances are real and legitimate. Are they? What about baptisms for the dead? Are they valid? How about endowments? Marriages? Family sealings? I am told that if I am married in the temple, then I will be with my husband and family forever. Is that true? Am I guaranteed eternal life and happiness just by going to the temple, being married there, and remaining a faithful member of the church? Is that all I need to do or is there something more that comes from God? What does God really require of me to obtain salvation? How do I know if I have the promise of eternal life?”

It’s important that we connect with heaven and know God. “Having a knowledge of God, we begin to know how to approach him, and how to ask so as to receive an answer. When we understand the character of God, and how to come to him, he begins to unfold the heavens to us, and to tell us all about it. When we are ready to come to him, he is ready to come to us.” TPJS pages 349-350

Child’s Sincere Temple Question, Part 3

Asking simple questions and seeking accurate answers can bring to light more truth and understanding. Did the saints meet the Lord’s deadline to build His house (The Nauvoo Temple)? Did they accomplish what God required of them during the allotted time? Did the citizens of Nauvoo focus on the things of God and dedicate everything they possessed to build His temple?

Or did they get distracted, preoccupied, and diverted from their God-given task? Did the early saints take advantage of the extended time Joseph purchased for them? Did they take seriously Joseph’s intercession and his sacrifice in their behalf? Or did they carelessly let the time pass, fail to receive the fullness of the priesthood, and loose the opportunity to obtain Zion?

The saints in Nauvoo seemed to be enjoying this time of peace and security. It was a time of building homes and accumulating wealth. “The city was soon a bustle of activity and commerce as Saints gathered there from all parts of the United States, Canada, and England. Within four years, Nauvoo had become one of the largest cities in Illinois. Church members lived in relative peace, secure in the fact that a prophet walked and labored among them.” Our Heritage

As the temple remained unfinished, homes, businesses, and enterprises were popping up everywhere in Nauvoo. Remodeling with upgrades and perks was common among the saints. I don’t imagine they thought time would actually run out, at least they did not seriously consider the consequences. I doubt they knew exactly how much time they had, but their homes and personal interests seemed to take priority over building the Lord’s house.

At Joseph’s death, on June 27, 1844, the Nauvoo Temple was still in the early stages of construction. Prior to his death, Joseph pleaded with the saints to quickly build the house of the Lord in preparation for Zion. This would provide a place for God to come, open the heavens, and restore the fullness of the priesthood again. D&C 124:28, D&C 124:39

“The Church is not fully organized, in its proper order, and cannot be, until the Temple is completed, where places will be provided for the administration of the ordinances of the Priesthood” History of the Church, 4:603; from a discourse given by Joseph Smith on Apr. 28, 1842, in Nauvoo, Illinois

“Hasten the work in the Temple, renew your exertions to forward all the work of the last days, and walk before the Lord in soberness and righteousness. Let the Elders and Saints do away with lightmindedness, and be sober.” History of the Church, 6:52; from a discourse given by Joseph Smith on Oct. 9, 1843, in Nauvoo, Illinois

“President Joseph suggested that it was best to let the Nauvoo House remain as it is until the temple is completed, as we need the temple more than anything else . . . We will let the Nauvoo house stand until the temple is done, and we will put all our forces on the Temple” History of the Church, 6:230; from a Joseph Smith journal entry, Mar. 4, 1844, Nauvoo, Illinois.

However, the people seemed to drag their feet and were slow to respond to the Lord’s offer. Joseph lamented over the fact that the saints were unprepared and unwilling to meet the Lord’s conditions. It grieved Joseph that the people didn’t follow the Lord’s commandment to build the temple. Joseph sacrificed his life. The people collectively did not come into the presence of God and have the fullness of the priesthood restored again. Zion was not obtained because there wasn’t a place prepared for the Lord to come. The saints didn’t qualify by “build[ing] a house to my name, for the most High to dwell therein.” D&C 124:27

Is Deity the only source from which to obtain the fullness? Was the Nauvoo Temple the chosen place for this to happen? Was Joseph the chosen vessel through whom this was to occur? Since Joseph is dead and the temple is not complete, what now? After Joseph’s death, the saints hurried to complete the temple.

This reminds me of a similar situation I sometimes have with my children. I give them a job to do in the morning. I tell them that if they get their morning work done, we’ll have some special activities in the afternoon. I also let them know what will happen if they don’t get their job complete. I don’t nag them, but let them choose how to spend their morning. Some children follow through and receive the promised blessings, but that is not the case with all of the children. Some will play, tease others, or pursue their own interests during the morning. When they realize that the time is up, they panic, scramble, and try to finish the job that they should have been diligently working on all morning. They hope I will go back on my word and give them another chance. They may even think that I am not a kind and merciful parent when I follow through and do what I said I would do.

Like my children, the saints in Nauvoo scrambled and tried to finish the Nauvoo temple after Joseph was dead. Was there still time left to claim God’s blessings? Or had the offer expired? From then on, things seemed to go “south.” Was God’s hand of protection removed?

Were ordinances ever performed in the Nauvoo temple with God’s approval and seal? Did the Most High God dwell therein? Was His comfort, power, or presence felt there? Did God protect, care for, and guard the temple? If not, why? Did the hand of God protect the saints? Did they get moved out of their place and driven from Nauvoo? Why? D&C 124:45 Did they witness blessings and protection from God? Or did they experience cursings, wrath, indignation, and judgments? D&C 124:48

Did they find peace, glory, and power from heaven, or were they driven into the wilderness like the children of Israel? Was Joseph taken from their midst like Moses was taken from the children of Israel? Were they left only with the lesser priesthood? D&C 84:25-26 Did they succeed in obtaining Zion? Did they receive conversations with heaven, revelations, glory, honor, and endowments from the Lord? Did they find the Nauvoo temple to be the place where God came to them, talked to them, and ministered to them? Did He reveal His ordinances unto them and things that had been kept hid from before the foundation of the world pertaining to dispensation of the fullness of times? D&C 124:39-41 Did the Lord perform the oath and fulfill the promises that they expected at his hands? Did God restore that which was lost? D&C 124:47

“Around midnight on 8–9 October 1848, the Nauvoo Temple was set on fire.” This is a different type of fire than what was experienced by the saints in Kirtland. When the Kirtland temple was dedicated, it was filled with fire, angels, and power from heaven. The whole building was full of light. The only fire that visited the Nauvoo temple was a destructive fire.

“On 27 May 1850, the temple was struck by a tornado, which toppled one wall, and Cabet ordered the demolition of two more walls in the interests of public safety, leaving only the façade standing. In February 1865 Nauvoo's City Council ordered the final demolition of the last standing portion of the temple—one lone corner of the façade.” Soon afterwards, all evidence of the temple disappeared. It was utterly destroyed. What message does this convey?

Does this sound like a spot that was made holy?
