Happy Birthday Emily - Red Marbles
Red Marbles
During the waning years of the Great Depression in a small southeastern Kansas community, I used to stop by Mr. Miller's roadside stand for farm fresh produce as the season made it available. Food and money were still extremely scarce and bartering was used extensively.
One particular day, Mr. Miller was bagging some early potatoes for me. I noticed a small boy, delicate of bone and feature, ragged but clean, hungrily apprising a basket of freshly picked green peas. I paid for my potatoes but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas. I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes. Pondering the peas, I couldn't help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller and the ragged boy next to me.
"Hello Barry, how are you today?"
"H'lo, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Jus' admirin' them peas...sure look good."
"They are good, Barry. How's your Ma?"
"Fine. Gittin' stronger alla' time."
"Good. Anything I can help you with?"
"No, Sir. Jus' admirin' them peas."
"Would you like to take some home?"
"No, Sir. Got nuthin' to pay for 'em with."
"Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?"
"All I got's my prize marble here."
"Is that right? Let me see it."
"Here 'tis. She's a dandy."
"I can see that. Hmmmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?"
"Not 'zackley .....but, almost."
"Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble."
"Sure will. Thanks, Mr. Miller."
Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me. With a smile she said, "There are two other boys like him in our community, all three are in very poor circumstances. Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes or whatever. When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he decides he doesn't like red after all and he sends them home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, perhaps."
I left the stand, smiling to myself, impressed with this man. A short time later I moved to Colorado but I never forgot the story of this man, the boys and their bartering. Several years went by, each more rapid than the previous one. Just recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in that Idaho community and while I was there learned that Mr. Miller had died.
They were having his viewing that evening and knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them. Upon our arrival at the mortuary, we fell into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could. Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uniform and the other two wore nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts - very professional looking. They approached Mrs. Miller, standing smiling and composed, by her husband's casket. Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on to the casket. Her misty light blue eyes followed them as, one by one, each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the casket. Each left the mortuary, awkwardly, wiping his eyes.
Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and mentioned the story she had told me about the marbles. Eyes glistening, she took my hand and led me to the casket. "Those three young men who just left were the boys I told you about. They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim 'traded' them. Now, at last when Jim could not change his mind about color or size - they came to pay their debt. "
"We've never had a great deal of the wealth of this world," she confided, "but right now, Jim would consider himself the richest man in Idaho." With loving gentleness, she lifted her husband's lifeless fingers. Resting underneath were three exquisitely shined, red marbles!

Happy Birthday Crystalynne
Angela wanted us to know the reason she picked us. When she saw our totally white family with so many children willingly accept a child of another race, she knew that there was a lot of love in our home. She wanted her baby to be raised with that kind of love. As she looked through our pictures, she could see the love. Angela could tell that John loved me. When asked how she could tell, Angela said, “Look at the pajamas. (We were all in matching pajamas) What kind of man would wear homemade, Dalmatian, spotted pajamas for his wife and children?”
We took the children to Belinda’s home so she could tend them while we were at the hospital. Before we went to the hospital, we went over to Mom and Dad’s house to tell them our exciting news. Mom wasn’t home, so I talked to her on the phone. I told her we had some news but wanted to share it in person. When she walked through the door she said, “So what’s the big news?” I said, “Guess!” She said, “You’re having a baby.” I said, “Yes, today.” That confused her a bit until I explained.

Happy Birthday Jaylee – Our Attitudes
Our Attitudes
Attitude, to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do.
It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home.
The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.
We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable.
The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.
I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.
And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes.

Birthday of My Queen
On days both dark and sunny
Jennifer is my precious and loving honey
To me her birthday is a special day
I hope it brings her joy in every way
Such happy times we share
Few things could ever compare
Each year our bond just seems to grow
And she makes me happy, you know
We've been in love for quite a while
And she seems to always share a smile
With deep blue eyes of light
She gives me much delight
I find her so very cute
With absolutely no dispute
Each day she walks to exercise
And then we often romanticize
Our love is deep and often shown
A fantastic family we have grown
Too many children, some may say
But they just came anyway
She is a very special friend of mine
Who walks a nearly perfect line
She offers love and support to me
And reminds me what I'm to be
When I feel a little bit sad
She has a way to make me glad
She simply just appears
To wipe away my tears
If I have a disappointment
With me she makes an appointment
Throughout the many years
She has helped to ease my fears
She is a woman of faith, no doubt
A useless point to debate about
She firmly claims her mind and will
Determined her mission to fulfill
When another tries to push or shove
To alter sacred doctrines from above
She has a way to be straight and clear
And speak the truth without fear
She is not the type to surrender to evil
But does her best to be civil
The arrogant, pompous, and pushy
Just seem to be far too mushy
Sometimes accused of doing wrong
It’s not her nature to be formal
Some say, “Just be normal”
Come hear our brilliant and perfect precept
For surely you must accept
We claim the power to condemn and save
Authority to us God gave
She’s willing to consider a recommendation
But requires a reasonable explanation
Please, kindly me persuade
And just stop the masquerade
She hates to be a fake
And seeks to stay awake
To escape the pit and mire
And do all the Lord may require
My sweetheart with pure intent
Is not easy to be bent
She’s a woman with desire
To receive the full and burning fire
Refusing to bow and say, “Yes sir”
Often, causes a great big stir
When wolves speak in the name of the Lamb
She promptly rejects them, by damn
Only in God, will she place her trust
She chooses His pathway bright
And daily receives more light
God softly speaks from time to time
To present a new paradigm
Her heart has often grown and changed
As beliefs are being rearranged
Determined to ascend God's mountain
And partake of the everlasting fountain
She is overcoming confusion and strife
As she seeks Eternal life
Today is the birthday of my queen
On the path to be pure and clean
A precious and lovely queen to me
And a divine mother of love to be
I Love You Sweetheart

Happy Birthday Joseph and Marianne
Last week we bought their birthday presents. When we got home, we just put the shopping bags on our bedroom, closet floor. The next day when Joseph and Marianne woke up, they found their presents. Without even asking, they started playing with their new toys. I guess we didn’t do a very good job of hiding them.
They didn’t want to wait a whole week to play with their new stuff, and we didn’t think it was a big deal. So, they both enjoyed an early birthday.
Last week they were drawing on the patio with their new sidewalk chalk. It’s a little wet and snowy to be doing that today.
They love to play outside. While the older children worked on their schoolwork, they went sledding down the little hill and played with their new balls, trucks, and loaders.
Marianne enjoys her dump truck and loader just as much as Joseph enjoys his. Playing in the snow is even better than playing in the dirt. Their new toys don’t get all dirty. This means they can bring them inside without having to first clean off all the mud and dirt.
Joseph was so excited to help April make his birthday cake. He took the mix out of the package and tried to open it. He pulled and yanked on the plastic bag and ended up spilling the mix all over the counter.
Marianne wants brownies for her birthday. She can help make them on Wednesday. Baking is almost as much fun as eating the finished product.

Rachel’s Birthday – My Family
It’s Rachel’s thirteenth birthday today. She’s as angelic and sweet as she looks in the picture. Being her parent has been a real joy. This is one of the scriptures Rachel likes:
Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your
Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. Matthew 6:1-4
Rachel wrote this poem about a year ago.
My family – by Rachel Willis
My family tests me every day
With all the things they do and say
Like tease a little here and there
They test my patience everywhere
When they hit me on the cheek
Do I begin to fight and shriek?
Or if they want to play a game
Do I say no and say with shame
You’re way too little to play this game?
So I can go the extra mile?
Do I overcome all my tests?
So I can act my very best?
So when I look into His eyes
I think about the little guys.
Happy Birthday, Rachel! We love you.
