A witness from God can be relied upon. As you read our thoughts, beliefs, and experiences, we invite you to obtain a witness for yourself. If something we say or imply does not ring true, then you should feel no obligation to accept it. Life is an individual and unique journey with God. Although we can help and encourage each other, we need to be careful not to come between God and another person.

The Blessing of Temples in My Life

The lesson in Relief Society today was titled, “See Yourself in the Temple.” In thinking about the upcoming lesson, I've thought a lot about temples this week . They've played an important role and have been a blessing in my life.

The children of Israel were given a prophet who saw God face to face and talked with him.

The words of God, which he spake unto Moses at a time when Moses was caught up into an exceedingly high mountain, And he saw God face to face, and he talked with him, and the glory of God was upon Moses; therefore Moses could endure his presence. Moses 1:1-2

Like all prophets sent from the presence of God, Moses sought diligently to sanctify his people that they might behold the face of God, but they would not.

And this greater priesthood administereth the gospel and holdeth the key of the mysteries of the kingdom, even the key of the knowledge of God. Therefore, in the ordinances thereof, the power of godliness is manifest. And without the ordinances thereof, and the authority of the priesthood, the power of godliness is not manifest unto men in the flesh; For without this no man can see the face of God, even the Father, and live.

Now this Moses plainly taught to the children of Israel in the wilderness, and sought diligently to sanctify his people that they might behold the face of God; But they hardened their hearts and could not endure his presence; therefore, the Lord in his wrath, for his anger was kindled against them, swore that they should not enter into his rest while in the wilderness, which rest is the fulness of his glory. Therefore, he took Moses out of their midst, and the Holy Priesthood also; And the lesser priesthood continued, which priesthood holdeth the key of the ministering of angels and the preparatory gospel; D&C 84:19-26

Moses was commanded to build a tabernacle (portable temple). The tabernacle was to be fashioned after the true tabernacle which the Lord pitched. The temple was an example and shadow of heavenly things.

Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer. For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount. Hebrews 8:1-5

The Lord's Prophet Moses gave the Israelites a law of performances and ordinances which were intended to point their minds and hearts to the atonement of Jesus Christ.

And it came to pass on the eighth day, that Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of Israel; And he said unto Aaron, Take thee a young calf for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering, without blemish, and offer them before the Lord. And unto the children of Israel thou shalt speak, saying, Take ye a kid of the goats for a sin offering; and a calf and a lamb, both of the first year, without blemish, for a burnt offering; Also a bullock and a ram for peace offerings, to sacrifice before the Lord; and a meat offering mingled with oil: for to day the Lord will appear unto you.

And they brought that which Moses commanded before the tabernacle of the congregation: and all the congregation drew near and stood before the Lord. And Moses said, This is the thing which the Lord commanded that ye should do: and the glory of the Lord shall appear unto you. And Moses said unto Aaron, Go unto the altar, and offer thy sin offering, and thy burnt offering, and make an atonement for thyself, and for the people: and offer the offering of the people, and make an atonement for them; as the Lord commanded.

Aaron therefore went unto the altar, and slew the calf of the sin offering, which was for himself. And the sons of Aaron brought the blood unto him: and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the bottom of the altar: But the fat, and the kidneys, and the caul above the liver of the sin offering, he burnt upon the altar; as the Lord commanded Moses. And the flesh and the hide he burnt with fire without the camp. And he slew the burnt offering; and Aaron’s sons presented unto him the blood, which he sprinkled round about upon the altar. And they presented the burnt offering unto him, with the pieces thereof, and the head: and he burnt them upon the altar. And he did wash the inwards and the legs, and burnt them upon the burnt offering on the altar.

And he brought the people’s offering, and took the goat, which was the sin offering for the people, and slew it, and offered it for sin, as the first. And he brought the burnt offering, and offered it according to the manner. And he brought the meat offering, and took an handful thereof, and burnt it upon the altar, beside the burnt sacrifice of the morning. He slew also the bullock and the ram for a sacrifice of peace offerings, which was for the people: and Aaron’s sons presented unto him the blood, which he sprinkled upon the altar round about, And the fat of the bullock and of the ram, the rump, and that which covereth the inwards, and the kidneys, and the caul above the liver: And they put the fat upon the breasts, and he burnt the fat upon the altar: And the breasts and the right shoulder Aaron waved for a wave offering before the Lord; as Moses commanded.

And Aaron lifted up his hand toward the people, and blessed them, and came down from offering of the sin offering, and the burnt offering, and peace offerings. And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of the congregation, and came out, and blessed the people: and the glory of the Lord appeared unto all the people. And there came a fire out from before the Lord, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat: which when all the people saw, they shouted, and fell on their faces. Leviticus 9:1-24

This is how the ordinance of Passover was instituted:

And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you. Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house: And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:

And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening. And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof. And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.

And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the Lord’s passover. For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord. And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the Lord throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.

Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. And in the first day there shall be an holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be an holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you. And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever.

In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even. Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land. Ye shall eat nothing leavened; in all your habitations shall ye eat unleavened bread.

Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover. And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the basin; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning. For the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the Lord will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you. And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever.

And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the Lord will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service. And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the Lord’s passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped. And the children of Israel went away, and did as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.

And it came to pass, that at midnight the Lord smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle. And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.

And he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, Rise up, and get you forth from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve the Lord, as ye have said. Also take your flocks and your herds, as ye have said, and be gone; and bless me also. And the Egyptians were urgent upon the people, that they might send them out of the land in haste; for they said, We be all dead men. And the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneading troughs being bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders. And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: And the Lord gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them such things as they required. And they spoiled the Egyptians.

And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children. And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle. And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought forth out of Egypt, for it was not leavened; because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not tarry, neither had they prepared for themselves any victual.

Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years. And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt. It is a night to be much observed unto the Lord for bringing them out from the land of Egypt: this is that night of the Lord to be observed of all the children of Israel in their generations.

And the Lord said unto Moses and Aaron, This is the ordinance of the passover: There shall no stranger eat thereof: But every man’s servant that is bought for money, when thou hast circumcised him, then shall he eat thereof. A foreigner and an hired servant shall not eat thereof. In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof.

All the congregation of Israel shall keep it. And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the passover to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof. One law shall be to him that is home born, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among you. Thus did all the children of Israel; as the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they. And it came to pass the selfsame day, that the Lord did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies. Exodus 12:1-51

Why were the children of Israel given a law of performances and ordinances to observe year after year? Did they believe these performances and ordinances would save them? Did they understand with all their temple rites and ceremonial ordinances, it was only through the atonement of Christ they could be saved?

And moreover, I say unto you, that salvation doth not come by the law alone; and were it not for the atonement, which God himself shall make for the sins and iniquities of his people, that they must unavoidably perish, notwithstanding the law of Moses.

And now I say unto you that it was expedient that there should be a law given to the children of Israel, yea, even a very strict law; for they were a stiffnecked people, quick to do iniquity, and slow to remember the Lord their God; Therefore there was a law given them, yea, a law of performances and of ordinances, a law which they were to observe strictly from day to day, to keep them in remembrance of God and their duty towards him.

But behold, I say unto you, that all these things were types of things to come. And now, did they understand the law? I say unto you, Nay, they did not all understand the law; and this because of the hardness of their hearts; for they understood not that there could not any man be saved except it were through the redemption of God.

For behold, did not Moses prophesy unto them concerning the coming of the Messiah, and that God should redeem his people? Yea, and even all the prophets who have prophesied ever since the world began—have they not spoken more or less concerning these things? Have they not said that God himself should come down among the children of men, and take upon him the form of man, and go forth in mighty power upon the face of the earth? Yea, and have they not said also that he should bring to pass the resurrection of the dead, and that he, himself, should be oppressed and afflicted? Mosiah 13:28-35

Yea, even doth not Isaiah say: Who hath believed our report, and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground; he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Surely he has borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

All we, like sheep, have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquities of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb so he opened not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment; and who shall declare his generation? For he was cut off out of the land of the living; for the transgressions of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no evil, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief; when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. He shall see the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied; by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death; and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bore the sins of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Mosiah 14:1-12

So while the chief priests and leaders of God's church offered ceremonial sacrifices in the temple, they sacrificed their Lord, the true pascal Lamb. Their temple ordinances were instituted to testify of Christ, but only a few recognized and embraced their Lord. The leaders and members of God's church, with all of their performances and ordinances, were the ones responsible for crucifying the Lord.

When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples. Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.

Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year. Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter. Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man’s disciples? He saith, I am not. And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.

The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.

And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so? Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me? Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.

And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not. One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him? Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.

Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man? They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee. Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.

Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done? Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all. But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber. John 18:1-40

Now let's fast forward almost two thousand years. God sent another prophet who talked with God face to face. Joseph Smith also sought diligently to sanctify his people that they might behold the face of God. This prophet was martyred with his brother. Before he was taken from their midst, he gave them a law of performances and ordinances to teach them of heavenly things. In the ceremony the people pass the angels who stand as sentinels, converse with the Lord through the veil, and enter into God's presence.

But like the Jews, many people mistake the ceremony for the real thing. They think the ceremony will save them while rejecting the invitation to seek the face of the Lord.

And so now, though I am no longer allowed to enter their temples, I remember what was taught me in that beautiful ceremony. I have been blessed and taught by angels who stand as sentinels as I seek the face of the Lord. My faith is firm for I can see the path I must follow. The temple as a teacher has done its work upon my heart, and I see the blessing it has been in my life. I see myself in the temple, the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

The school of the gods

The scriptures call it eternal progression, principles of eternal life, the plan of salvation, etc. I call it the school of the gods. It helps me remember I am here to learn. The classroom has been provided, and all of the tools and resources are here. I can apply myself, study, learn, obey, sacrifice, love, serve, and take advantage of everything offered, or I can waste away my time (2 Nephi 9:27).

All things shall give us experience, and shall be for our good (D&C 122:7). I choose light, learning, love, knowledge, growth, and truth. Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 5:20) helps us see the blessings that are continually before us. When the student is ready, the teacher appears.

The Immortal Spirit

I have another subject to dwell upon, which is calculated to exalt man; but it is impossible for me to say much on this subject. I shall therefore just touch upon it, for time will not permit me to say all. It is associated with the subject of the resurrection of the dead,--namely, the soul--the mind of man--the immortal spirit. Where did it come from? All learned men and doctors of divinity say that God created it in the beginning; but it is not so: the very idea lessens man in my estimation. I do not believe the doctrine; I know better. Hear it, all ye ends of the world; for God has told me so; and if you don't believe me, it will not make the truth without effect. I will make a man appear a fool before I get through; if he does not believe it. I am going to tell of things more noble.

We say that God himself is a self-existent being. Who told you so? It is correct enough; but how did it get into you heads? Who told you that man did not exist in like manner upon the same principles? Man does exist upon the same principles. God made a tabernacle and put a spirit into it, and it became a living soul. (Refers to the old Bible.) How does it read in the Hebrew? It does not say in the Hebrew that God created the spirit of man. It says "God made man out of the earth and put into him Adam's spirit, and so became a living body." TPJS page 351

The mind or the intelligence which man possesses is co-equal with God himself. I know that my testimony is true; hence, when I talk to these mourners, what have they lost? Their relatives and friends are only separated from their bodies for a short season: their spirits which existed with God have left the tabernacle of clay only for a little moment, as it were; and they now exist in a place where they converse together the same as we do on the earth.

I am dwelling on the immortality of the spirit of man. Is it logical to say that the intelligence of spirits is immortal, and yet that it had a beginning? The intelligence of spirits had not beginning, neither will it have an end. That is good logic. That which has a beginning may have an end. There never was a time when there were not spirits; for they are co-equal [co-eternal] with our Father in heaven. TPJS page 353

I want to reason more on the spirit of man; for I am dwelling on the body and spirit of man--on the subject of the dead. I take my ring from my finger and liken it unto the mind of man--the immortal part, because it has no beginning. Suppose you cut it in two; then it has a beginning and an end; but join it again, and it continues one eternal round. So with the spirit of man. As the Lord liveth, if it had a beginning, it will have an end. All the fools and learned and wise men from the beginning of creation, who say that the spirit of man had a beginning, prove that it must have an end; and if that doctrine is true, then the doctrine of annihilation would be true. But if I am right, I might with boldness proclaim from the house-tops that God never had the power to create the spirit of man at all. God himself could not create himself.

Intelligence is eternal and exists upon a self-existent principle. It is a spirit from age to age, and there is no creation about it. All the minds and spirits that God ever sent into the world are susceptible of enlargement.
TPJS page 354

Did God create the spirit of man? How is man co-equal with God? Did the spirit of man have a beginning? Is God a self-existent being? Are you a self-existent being?

The Power to Advance in Knowledge

The first principles of man are self-existent with God. God himself, finding he was in the midst of spirits and glory, because he was more intelligent, saw proper to institute laws whereby the rest could have a privilege to advance like himself. The relationship we have with God places us in a situation to advance in knowledge. He has power to institute laws to instruct the weaker intelligences, that they may be exalted with himself, so that they might have one glory upon another, and all that knowledge, power, glory, and intelligence, which is requisite in order to save them in the world of spirits. TPJS page 354

What is the relationship we have with God? What opportunity does that relationship give us? Why were laws instituted? What is requisite to save us in the world of spirits?

This is good doctrine. It tastes good. I can taste the principles of eternal life, and so can you. They are given to my by the revelations of Jesus Christ; and I know that when I tell you these words of eternal life as they are given to me, you taste them, and I know that you believe them. You say honey is sweet, and so do I. I can also taste the spirit of eternal life. I know it is good; and when I tell you of these things which were given my by inspiration of the Holy Spirit, you are bound to receive them as sweet, and rejoice more and more.

The Relation of Man to God

I want to talk more of the relation of man to God. I will open your eyes in relation to your dead. All things whatsoever God in his infinite wisdom has seen fit and proper to reveal to us, while we are dwelling in mortality, in regard to our mortal bodies, are revealed to us in the abstract, and independent of affinity of this mortal tabernacle, but are revealed to our spirits precisely as though we had no bodies at all; and those revelations which will save our spirits will save our bodies. God reveals them to us in view of no eternal dissolution of the body, or tabernacle. Hence the responsibility, the awful responsibility, that rests upon us in relation to our dead; for all the spirits who have not obeyed the Gospel in the flesh must either obey it in the spirit or be damned. Solemn thought!--dreadful thought! Is there nothing to be done?--no preparation--no salvation for our fathers and friends who have died without having had the opportunity to obey the decrees of the Son of Man? Would to God that I had forty days and nights in which to tell you all! I would let you know that I am not a "fallen prophet." TPJS page 355

Can anyone be saved without obeying the Gospel? Upon what conditions is any man saved? What is the awful responsibility, that rests upon us in relation to our dead? Have we obeyed the gospel? What is the gospel? (D&C 39:5-6) How can we help our dead?

Our Greatest Responsibility

What promises are made in relation to the subject of the salvation of the dead? and what kind of characters are those who can be saved, although their bodies are mouldering and decaying in the grave? When his commandments teach us, it is in view of eternity; for we are looked upon by God as though we were in eternity. God dwells in eternity, and does not view things as we do.

The greatest responsibility in this world that God has laid upon us is to seek after our dead. The Apostle says, "They without us cannot be made perfect;" (Hebrews 11:40) for it is necessary that the sealing power should be in our hands to seal our children and our dead for the fulness of the dispensation of times--a dispensation to meet the promises made by Jesus Christ before the foundation of the world for the salvation of man.

Now, I will speak of them. I will meet Paul half way. I say to you, Paul, you cannot be perfect without us. It is necessary that those who are going before and those who come after us should have salvation in common with us; and thus hath God made it obligatory upon man. Hence, God said, "I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord; and he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse." (Malachi 4:5-6.)

A Salvation for Men

I have a declaration to make as to the provisions which God hath made to suit the conditions of man--made from before the foundation of the world. What has Jesus said? All sin, and all blasphemies, and every transgression, except one, that man can be guilty of, may be forgiven; and there is a salvation for all men, either in this world or the world to come, who have not committed the unpardonable sin, there being a provision either in this world or the world of spirits. Hence God hath made a provision that every spirit in the eternal world can be ferreted out and saved unless he has committed that unpardonable sin which cannot be remitted to him either in this world or the world of spirits. God has wrought out a salvation for all men, unless they have committed a certain sin; and every man who has a friend in the eternal world can save him, unless he has committed the unpardonable sin. And so you can see how far you can be a savior. TPJS page 356

What promises are made in relation to the subject of the salvation of the dead? and what kind of characters are those who can be saved, although their bodies are mouldering and decaying in the grave? Why is the sealing power necessary for the salvation of man? What does it mean to have salvation in common with us? What has Jesus said? Where will salvation take place if doesn't take place in this world? God hath made a provision that every spirit in the eternal world can be ferreted out and saved, are there any exceptions? What is the power of having a friend in the eternal world?

1 Behold, I will reveal unto you the Priesthood, by the hand of Elijah the prophet, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.
2 And he shall plant in the hearts of the children the promises made to the fathers, and the hearts of the children shall turn to their fathers.
3 If it were not so, the whole earth would be utterly wasted at his coming. D&C 2

There are promises made to the fathers. What are the promises made to the fathers? Which fathers had promises? Which fathers are our hearts to be turned to? Who are the fathers? Who are the children? Who are the dead? When Joseph speaks of our children and our dead, are those different characters than the fathers? Is it important that we be sealed to the fathers who have promises? Is it important that the dead and the children be sealed to fathers that have promises? Do you have a promise? Can you help your dead without a promise?

According to the scriptures, how does one obtain sealing power? Who can bestow sealing power? What is the power given to someone who can seal? Can it be passed from man to man? Or does it come straight from God? Here are three examples. What are some other examples? Is the Lord the same yesterday, today, and forever? Do we obtain sealing power today the same way the prophets of old obtained sealing power? Are there any examples in the scriptures of a man giving another man the sealing power?

Nephi
4 Blessed art thou, Nephi, for those things which thou hast done; for I have beheld how thou hast with unwearyingness declared the word, which I have given unto thee, unto this people. And thou hast not feared them, and hast not sought thine own life, but hast sought my will, and to keep my commandments.
5 And now, because thou hast done this with such unwearyingness, behold, I will bless thee forever; and I will make thee mighty in word and in deed, in faith and in works; yea, even that all things shall be done unto thee according to thy word, for thou shalt not ask that which is contrary to my will.
6 Behold, thou art Nephi, and I am God. Behold, I declare it unto thee in the presence of mine angels, that ye shall have power over this people, and shall smite the earth with famine, and with pestilence, and destruction, according to the wickedness of this people.
7 Behold, I give unto you power, that whatsoever ye shall seal on earth shall be sealed in heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven; and thus shall ye have power among this people.
8 And thus, if ye shall say unto this temple it shall be rent in twain, it shall be done.
9 And if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou cast down and become smooth, it shall be done.
10 And behold, if ye shall say that God shall smite this people, it shall come to pass.
11 And now behold, I command you, that ye shall go and declare unto this people, that thus saith the Lord God, who is the Almighty: Except ye repent ye shall be smitten, even unto destruction. Helaman 10:7

Joseph
40 I am the Lord thy God, and I gave unto thee, my servant Joseph, an appointment, and restore all things. Ask what ye will, and it shall be given unto you according to my word. . .
45 For I have conferred upon you the keys and power of the priesthood, wherein I restore all things, and make known unto you all things in due time.
46 And verily, verily, I say unto you, that whatsoever you seal on earth shall be sealed in heaven; and whatsoever you bind on earth, in my name and by my word, saith the Lord, it shall be eternally bound in the heavens; and whosesoever sins you remit on earth shall be remitted eternally in the heavens; and whosesoever sins you retain on earth shall be retained in heaven.
47 And again, verily I say, whomsoever you bless I will bless, and whomsoever you curse I will curse, saith the Lord; for I, the Lord, am thy God.
48 And again, verily I say unto you, my servant Joseph, that whatsoever you give on earth, and to whomsoever you give any one on earth, by my word and according to my law, it shall be visited with blessings and not cursings, and with my power, saith the Lord, and shall be without condemnation on earth and in heaven.
49 For I am the Lord thy God, and will be with thee even unto the end of the world, and through all eternity; for verily I seal upon you your exaltation, and prepare a throne for you in the kingdom of my Father, with Abraham your father. D&C 132:40, 45-49

Peter
17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Matthew 16:17-19

Who is the Holy Spirit of Promise? Who has been anointed by the Lord and appointed unto this power? Does Lord anoint the Lord's anointed? Can a man and wife make a valid covenant for eternity if it is not sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise? If a marriage is not sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise, is there a marriage when they are out of this world?

And again, verily I say unto you, if a man marry a wife, and make a covenant with her for time and for all eternity, if that covenant is not by me or by my word, which is my law, and is not sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, through him whom I have anointed and appointed unto this power, then it is not valid neither of force when they are out of the world, because they are not joined by me, saith the Lord, neither by my word; when they are out of the world it cannot be received there, because the angels and the gods are appointed there, by whom they cannot pass; they cannot, therefore, inherit my glory; for my house is a house of order, saith the Lord God. Doctrine and Covenants 132:18

What is the more sure word of prophecy? Who has power in the Holy Priesthood to seal someone up to eternal life? How did they receive this power? Did they receive it in the same manner as Nephi, Joseph, and Peter?

1 In the celestial glory there are three heavens or degrees;
2 And in order to obtain the highest, a man must enter into this order of the priesthood [meaning the new and everlasting covenant of marriage];
3 And if he does not, he cannot obtain it.
4 He may enter into the other, but that is the end of his kingdom; he cannot have an increase.
5 (May 17th, 1843.) The more sure word of prophecy means a man’s knowing that he is sealed up unto eternal life, by revelation and the spirit of prophecy, through the power of the Holy Priesthood. D&C 131

What is the purpose of the greater priesthood? What does the greater priesthood administer? What is the key of the mysteries of the kingdom? Where do we find the power of godliness manifest? The authority of the greater priesthood prepares us for what? Are valid ordinances essential? Who is administering valid ordinances today? What are the fruits of those administering valid ordinances? Can someone who has not beheld the face of God administer a valid ordinance? Which ones? Which ordinances are administered using lesser priesthood? What is the preparatory gospel? Why is the ministry of angels important to those without higher priesthood? Which ordinances are administered using higher priesthood?

19 And this greater priesthood administereth the gospel and holdeth the key of the mysteries of the kingdom, even the key of the knowledge of God.
20 Therefore, in the ordinances thereof, the power of godliness is manifest.
21 And without the ordinances thereof, and the authority of the priesthood, the power of godliness is not manifest unto men in the flesh;
22 For without this no man can see the face of God, even the Father, and live.
23 Now this Moses plainly taught to the children of Israel in the wilderness, and sought diligently to sanctify his people that they might behold the face of God;
24 But they hardened their hearts and could not endure his presence; therefore, the Lord in his wrath, for his anger was kindled against them, swore that they should not enter into his rest while in the wilderness, which rest is the fulness of his glory.
25 Therefore, he took Moses out of their midst, and the Holy Priesthood also;
26 And the lesser priesthood continued, which priesthood holdeth the key of the ministering of angels and the preparatory gospel;
27 Which gospel is the gospel of repentance and of baptism, and the remission of sins, and the law of carnal commandments, which the Lord in his wrath caused to continue with the house of Aaron among the children of Israel until John, whom God raised up, being filled with the Holy Ghost from his mother’s womb.
28 For he was baptized while he was yet in his childhood, and was ordained by the angel of God at the time he was eight days old unto this power, to overthrow the kingdom of the Jews, and to make straight the way of the Lord before the face of his people, to prepare them for the coming of the Lord, in whose hand is given all power. Doctrine and Covenants 84

What is the Lord's reaction to those who harden their hearts and refuse to come into his presence while in the flesh? What does it mean to enter into the rest of the Lord? What does it mean to be sanctified? What is the sanctification process? How did Moses get the greater priesthood? Did the men in Israel hold the same priesthood as Moses? Was it possible for Moses to confer this priesthood upon another? Why or why not?

Why did Jesus go to John the Baptist to be baptized? Who ordained John the Baptist? Was John the Baptist part of the church hierarchy? Why didn't Jesus go to the priests of the church to get baptized? These priests occupied the same seat as Moses, did they have the same authority? Can the authority Moses possessed be passed down from man to man? Why or why not? Since Caiaphas sat in Moses's seat, did he have the same authority as Moses? How did the scribes and the Pharisees feel about the baptism offered by John? Were they willing to humble themselves and receive an authoritative baptism or were they content with their church baptism? Why did the chief priests, scribes, and elders of the church question Jesus's authority? Did the church leaders think they were only one who could disseminate authority? Do we have chief seats in our synagogues? Do we have masters and Rabbis in our synagogues? How does Jesus feel about this?

27 ¶And they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders,
28 And say unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority to do these things?
29 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
30 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me.
31 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him?
32 But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people: for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed.
33 And they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering saith unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things. Mark 11:27-33

1 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat:
3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. Matthew 23:1-12

How does Christ, the Lord God Omnipotent, seal you his? What is the purpose of bringing you to heaven?

Therefore, I would that ye should be steadfast and immovable, always abounding in good works, that Christ, the Lord God Omnipotent, may seal you his, that you may be brought to heaven, that ye may have everlasting salvation and eternal life, through the wisdom, and power, and justice, and mercy of him who created all things, in heaven and in earth, who is God above all. Amen. Mosiah 5:15

Why does the Father need to bear record before someone is sealed up unto eternal life?

And of as many as the Father shall bear record, to you shall be given power to seal them up unto eternal life. Amen. Doctrine and Covenants 68:12

***Notice the use of tenses in D&C 76 has, are, shall be. ***

50 And again we bear record—for we saw and heard, and this is the testimony of the gospel of Christ concerning them who shall come forth in the resurrection of the just—
51 They are they who received the testimony of Jesus, and believed on his name and were baptized after the manner of his burial, being buried in the water in his name, and this according to the commandment which he has given—

Who has the testimony of Jesus that is to be received? Will any baptism do? Or does it need to be an authorized baptism? Who can offer an authorized baptism?

52 That by keeping the commandments they might be washed and cleansed from all their sins, and receive the Holy Spirit by the laying on of the hands of him who is ordained and sealed unto this power;

To receive the Holy Spirit by the laying on of hands is an ordinance. Who can perform this ordinance? Who has been sealed unto this power to perform this ordinance? (I wrote about this in depth in January - Apostleship and the Laying on of Hands for theGift of the Holy Ghost)

53 And who overcome by faith, and are sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, which the Father sheds forth upon all those who are just and true.
54 They are they who are the church of the Firstborn.

Who is the Holy Spirit of Promise? How does one become a member of the church of the Firstborn? If you are not a member of the church of the Firstborn, which church are you a member of? (1 Nephi 14:10) Is the church of the Firstborn the same as the church of the Lamb of God? Explain.

55 They are they into whose hands the Father has given all things—
56 They are they who are priests and kings, who have received of his fulness, and of his glory;
57 And are priests of the Most High, after the order of Melchizedek, which was after the order of Enoch, which was after the order of the Only Begotten Son.
58 Wherefore, as it is written, they are gods, even the sons of God—

To whom has the Father given all things? Who has received of his fulnes and of his glory? How does one become a priest of the Most High? How is Melchizedek Priesthood connected with being a god? What is the difference between a god (lower case) and God (upper case)? How does one become a son of God? Are we sons and daughters of God before this endowment?

59 Wherefore, all things are theirs, whether life or death, or things present, or things to come, all are theirs and they are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.

What things are theirs? Why does it include things present and things to come, but not things of the past? Does this tell us something about eternal progression? Who is Christ's Father? Who is the Father of those with Melchizedek priesthood? Who is our Father? Is Christ's father our father?

60 And they shall overcome all things.

Have the gods (lower case) overcome all things yet?

61 Wherefore, let no man glory in man, but rather let him glory in God, who shall subdue all enemies under his feet.

Is any glory to be given from one man to another man?

62 These shall dwell in the presence of God and his Christ forever and ever.
63 These are they whom he shall bring with him, when he shall come in the clouds of heaven to reign on the earth over his people.
64 These are they who shall have part in the first resurrection.
65 These are they who shall come forth in the resurrection of the just.
66 These are they who are come unto Mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly place, the holiest of all.
67 These are they who have come to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of Enoch, and of the Firstborn.
68 These are they whose names are written in heaven, where God and Christ are the judge of all.
69 These are they who are just men made perfect through Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, who wrought out this perfect atonement through the shedding of his own blood.
70 These are they whose bodies are celestial, whose glory is that of the sun, even the glory of God, the highest of all, whose glory the sun of the firmament is written of as being typical. D&C 76

What are the blessings of these gods? Who are their companions? Who are the inhabitants of Zion? What is this new [and everlasting covenant]? Are these words in D&C 76 showing us a progression? Do all of these things happen at once? or do we start at the first until we have obtained all of these blessings?

In the school of the gods, those with the most intelligence contribute the most. They are not only willing but able.

18 Howbeit that he made the greater star; as, also, if there be two spirits, and one shall be more intelligent than the other, yet these two spirits, notwithstanding one is more intelligent than the other, have no beginning; they existed before, they shall have no end, they shall exist after, for they are gnolaum, or eternal.
19 And the Lord said unto me: These two facts do exist, that there are two spirits, one being more intelligent than the other; there shall be another more intelligent than they; I am the Lord thy God, I am more intelligent than they all. Abraham 3:18-19

The questions can be asked, “Where I am in the school of the gods? What I am doing to help in this great work God has undertaken? Where I am? What's my next step?”

Child’s Sincere Temple Question, Part 7 Conclusion

Joseph Smith taught, “Then I would exhort you to go on and continue to call upon God until you make your calling and election sure for yourselves, by obtaining this more sure word of prophecy, and wait patiently for the promise until you obtain it, etc. Then, having this promise sealed unto them, it was an anchor to the soul, sure and steadfast.” TPJS pages 298-299, Ether 12:4

Joseph Smith asks some soul searching questions, “I want to ask this congregation, every man, woman and child, to answer the question in their own heart, what kind of a being God is? Ask yourselves; turn your thought into your hearts, and say if any of you have seen, heard, or communed with him. This is a question that may occupy your attention for a long time. I again repeat the question--What kind of a being is God? Does any man or woman know? Have any of you seen him, heard him, or communed with him? Here is the question that will, peradventure, from this time henceforth occupy your attention. The Scriptures inform us that "This is life eternal that they might know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent."

“If any man does not know God, and inquires what kind of a being he is,--if he will search diligently his own heart--if the declaration of Jesus and the apostles be true, he will realize that he has not eternal life; for there can be eternal life on no other principle.” TPJS pages 343-344

I am realizing that if I want eternal life, then I need to rend the veil, connect to heaven, and receive the Father and the Son.

Even if the fullness of the priesthood was taken from the saints and all that remains is the lesser priesthood, there is still a wonderful opportunity to connect with heaven. The Aaronic priesthood holds the keys of the ministering of angels and the preparatory gospel. D&C 13:1

Angels are connected with heaven and can help us connect too. Christ sends angels to minister to those who have strong faith and a firm mind. Angels are sent to declare the conditions of repentance. They declare the word of Christ unto the chosen vessels of the Lord, that they may bear testimony of him Moroni 7:30-31. Angels can teach us His doctrine and point us to Jesus Christ, who is our Redeemer. Then Christ will tell us what to do next. 2 Nephi 32:3,6

It is only through Christ, not men or organizations, that we are able to obtain forgiveness and be saved Mosiah 16:13, Helaman 5:9. He is the keeper of the gate and employs no servant there as a doorman 2 Nephi 9:41. It is reassuring and comforting that I can trust the One who completely knows my heart. The keeper of the gate cannot be deceived.

Religious leaders cannot subordinate God and dictate the salvation or damnation of another. They may declare judgment of men and claim the authority of God to do so, but heaven does not respect or honor men exercising priestcrafts. D&C 33:4, D&C 121:37 “And I want you to know that God, in the last days, while certain individuals are proclaiming his name, is not trifling with you or me.” TPJS page 347

No earthly authority, whether Pope, Priest, or Prophet, can stand between God and man. True messengers do not “set themselves up for a light unto the world, that they may get gain and praise of the world” 2 Nephi 26:29. A messenger from God never claims authority to save but points others to Christ. They come with a message, but will not allow you to worship or honor them. Revelation 22:8-9, 1 Nephi 17:55

Jesus has his own testimony. We must receive the testimony of Jesus to obtain salvation D&C 76:51-70. What is the testimony of Jesus? It is His testimony declaring to us that our sins are forgiven, declaring that we have been blessed with the promise of eternal life Enos 1:5-6.This is the more sure word of prophecy and only Christ provides it. D&C 131:5, Revelation 19:10

“Salvation cannot come without revelation; it is in vain for anyone to minister without it. No man is a minister of Jesus Christ without being a Prophet. No man can be a minister of Jesus Christ except he has the testimony of Jesus; and this is the spirit of prophecy. Whenever salvation has been administered, it has been by testimony. Men of the present time testify of heaven and hell, and have never seen either; and I will say that no man knows these things without this.” TPJS page 160

Whether or not you think the institutional church lost the fulness of the priesthood is for you to decide. Either way, it’s not going to hold you back. The fulness is still available to all. It cannot and does not come from men. It comes directly from God to an individual.

Many eternal truths and keys to salvation have been preserved through temple ordinances. After they were revealed through the prophet Joseph Smith, some of the temple ceremonies were altered. Even during my own lifetime, I have witnessed changes made to the ordinances. Isaiah 24:5

Nevertheless, the ceremonies still capture much light, portray a walk back into the presence of God, and preserve eternal truths. The ceremonies are presented in symbols and testify of the actual return to Him. They are not the real thing, just a blueprint, pattern, and model of the process. It’s a dry run. The temple ordinances are designed to invite the participants to come unto God.

The ordinances that many are familiar with today are performed by men and not performed by God. You are invited to experience the real thing. This happens when the veil of unbelief is parted, the heavens open, you actually converse with the Lord through the veil, and enter into His presence.

As we obey His commandments, make necessary sacrifices, follow the gospel of Jesus Christ, keep the law of chastity, and consecrate our lives to Him, further instruction and light will surely come. It can be anticipated and expected. “That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.” D&C 50:24 As we receive and embrace light, we will naturally receive more sacred light and knowledge from true messengers. They come from the presence of God, bring His message, and invite us to come unto Christ.

Now if your daughter were to ask you these questions, how would you answer? “Dad, I wonder if the temple ordinances are real and legitimate. Are they? What about baptisms for the dead? Are they valid? How about endowments? Marriages? Family sealings? I am told that if I am married in the temple, then I will be with my husband and family forever. Is that true? Am I guaranteed eternal life and happiness just by going to the temple, being married there, and remaining a faithful member of the church? Is that all I need to do or is there something more that comes from God? What does God really require of me to obtain salvation? How do I know if I have the promise of eternal life?”

It’s important that we connect with heaven and know God. “Having a knowledge of God, we begin to know how to approach him, and how to ask so as to receive an answer. When we understand the character of God, and how to come to him, he begins to unfold the heavens to us, and to tell us all about it. When we are ready to come to him, he is ready to come to us.” TPJS pages 349-350

Child’s Sincere Temple Question, Part 3

Asking simple questions and seeking accurate answers can bring to light more truth and understanding. Did the saints meet the Lord’s deadline to build His house (The Nauvoo Temple)? Did they accomplish what God required of them during the allotted time? Did the citizens of Nauvoo focus on the things of God and dedicate everything they possessed to build His temple?

Or did they get distracted, preoccupied, and diverted from their God-given task? Did the early saints take advantage of the extended time Joseph purchased for them? Did they take seriously Joseph’s intercession and his sacrifice in their behalf? Or did they carelessly let the time pass, fail to receive the fullness of the priesthood, and loose the opportunity to obtain Zion?

The saints in Nauvoo seemed to be enjoying this time of peace and security. It was a time of building homes and accumulating wealth. “The city was soon a bustle of activity and commerce as Saints gathered there from all parts of the United States, Canada, and England. Within four years, Nauvoo had become one of the largest cities in Illinois. Church members lived in relative peace, secure in the fact that a prophet walked and labored among them.” Our Heritage

As the temple remained unfinished, homes, businesses, and enterprises were popping up everywhere in Nauvoo. Remodeling with upgrades and perks was common among the saints. I don’t imagine they thought time would actually run out, at least they did not seriously consider the consequences. I doubt they knew exactly how much time they had, but their homes and personal interests seemed to take priority over building the Lord’s house.

At Joseph’s death, on June 27, 1844, the Nauvoo Temple was still in the early stages of construction. Prior to his death, Joseph pleaded with the saints to quickly build the house of the Lord in preparation for Zion. This would provide a place for God to come, open the heavens, and restore the fullness of the priesthood again. D&C 124:28, D&C 124:39

“The Church is not fully organized, in its proper order, and cannot be, until the Temple is completed, where places will be provided for the administration of the ordinances of the Priesthood” History of the Church, 4:603; from a discourse given by Joseph Smith on Apr. 28, 1842, in Nauvoo, Illinois

“Hasten the work in the Temple, renew your exertions to forward all the work of the last days, and walk before the Lord in soberness and righteousness. Let the Elders and Saints do away with lightmindedness, and be sober.” History of the Church, 6:52; from a discourse given by Joseph Smith on Oct. 9, 1843, in Nauvoo, Illinois

“President Joseph suggested that it was best to let the Nauvoo House remain as it is until the temple is completed, as we need the temple more than anything else . . . We will let the Nauvoo house stand until the temple is done, and we will put all our forces on the Temple” History of the Church, 6:230; from a Joseph Smith journal entry, Mar. 4, 1844, Nauvoo, Illinois.

However, the people seemed to drag their feet and were slow to respond to the Lord’s offer. Joseph lamented over the fact that the saints were unprepared and unwilling to meet the Lord’s conditions. It grieved Joseph that the people didn’t follow the Lord’s commandment to build the temple. Joseph sacrificed his life. The people collectively did not come into the presence of God and have the fullness of the priesthood restored again. Zion was not obtained because there wasn’t a place prepared for the Lord to come. The saints didn’t qualify by “build[ing] a house to my name, for the most High to dwell therein.” D&C 124:27

Is Deity the only source from which to obtain the fullness? Was the Nauvoo Temple the chosen place for this to happen? Was Joseph the chosen vessel through whom this was to occur? Since Joseph is dead and the temple is not complete, what now? After Joseph’s death, the saints hurried to complete the temple.

This reminds me of a similar situation I sometimes have with my children. I give them a job to do in the morning. I tell them that if they get their morning work done, we’ll have some special activities in the afternoon. I also let them know what will happen if they don’t get their job complete. I don’t nag them, but let them choose how to spend their morning. Some children follow through and receive the promised blessings, but that is not the case with all of the children. Some will play, tease others, or pursue their own interests during the morning. When they realize that the time is up, they panic, scramble, and try to finish the job that they should have been diligently working on all morning. They hope I will go back on my word and give them another chance. They may even think that I am not a kind and merciful parent when I follow through and do what I said I would do.

Like my children, the saints in Nauvoo scrambled and tried to finish the Nauvoo temple after Joseph was dead. Was there still time left to claim God’s blessings? Or had the offer expired? From then on, things seemed to go “south.” Was God’s hand of protection removed?

Were ordinances ever performed in the Nauvoo temple with God’s approval and seal? Did the Most High God dwell therein? Was His comfort, power, or presence felt there? Did God protect, care for, and guard the temple? If not, why? Did the hand of God protect the saints? Did they get moved out of their place and driven from Nauvoo? Why? D&C 124:45 Did they witness blessings and protection from God? Or did they experience cursings, wrath, indignation, and judgments? D&C 124:48

Did they find peace, glory, and power from heaven, or were they driven into the wilderness like the children of Israel? Was Joseph taken from their midst like Moses was taken from the children of Israel? Were they left only with the lesser priesthood? D&C 84:25-26 Did they succeed in obtaining Zion? Did they receive conversations with heaven, revelations, glory, honor, and endowments from the Lord? Did they find the Nauvoo temple to be the place where God came to them, talked to them, and ministered to them? Did He reveal His ordinances unto them and things that had been kept hid from before the foundation of the world pertaining to dispensation of the fullness of times? D&C 124:39-41 Did the Lord perform the oath and fulfill the promises that they expected at his hands? Did God restore that which was lost? D&C 124:47

“Around midnight on 8–9 October 1848, the Nauvoo Temple was set on fire.” This is a different type of fire than what was experienced by the saints in Kirtland. When the Kirtland temple was dedicated, it was filled with fire, angels, and power from heaven. The whole building was full of light. The only fire that visited the Nauvoo temple was a destructive fire.

“On 27 May 1850, the temple was struck by a tornado, which toppled one wall, and Cabet ordered the demolition of two more walls in the interests of public safety, leaving only the façade standing. In February 1865 Nauvoo's City Council ordered the final demolition of the last standing portion of the temple—one lone corner of the façade.” Soon afterwards, all evidence of the temple disappeared. It was utterly destroyed. What message does this convey?

Does this sound like a spot that was made holy?
