A witness from God can be relied upon. As you read our thoughts, beliefs, and experiences, we invite you to obtain a witness for yourself. If something we say or imply does not ring true, then you should feel no obligation to accept it. Life is an individual and unique journey with God. Although we can help and encourage each other, we need to be careful not to come between God and another person.

Question #1 – Was the Brother of Jared the first man to see God?

“And the Lord said unto him: Because of thy faith thou hast seen that I shall take upon me flesh and blood; and never has man come before me with such exceeding faith as thou hast; for were it not so ye could not have seen my finger. Sawest thou more than this?” Ether 3:9

“And never have I showed myself unto man whom I have created, for never has man believed in me as thou hast. Seest thou that ye are created after mine own image? Yea, even all men were created in the beginning after mine own image” Ether 3:15.

Does this mean that the Brother of Jared was the first man to see God?

What about Adam, Seth, Enos, Cainan, Mahalaleel, Jared, Enoch, and Methuselah D&C 107:48-54?

What am I missing here?

Disclaimer

We reserve and claim the right and privilege to change our thoughts, ideas, and beliefs on any issue as God reveals further light and knowledge.

We have a lot of questions. At this time, we do not have perfect knowledge only beliefs, ideas, and questions. We acknowledge that some of our beliefs may be false beliefs. Questions are good because they challenge our viewpoints. Since we don’t always know the difference between our false traditions and the ways of God, we need to keep our minds and hearts open to what God has to reveal.

Questions can destroy faith or build faith. If the intention behind the question is to align our lives with truth, the questioning process is faith promoting. If the intention behind the question is to justify an angry heart or find an excuse to remain in sin, questions can be destructive.

We have confidence that if we continue asking God questions with the intent to obey all His commands, He will rearrange our beliefs and present new paradigms . . . until we come to that perfect day and know for ourselves.

Life is a personal and unique journey with God. This blog is an attempt to record our thoughts, ideas, and experiences as we seek to come back into the presence of God. It is highly probable that we will get some things wrong along the way. That’s part of our progression. This is only a record of the journey, not a claim that we’ve got it all figured out.

Looking for Witnesses of Christ, Part 4 Conclusion

Throughout my life, I’ve loved reading the stories in the Book of Mormon. They are simple and easy to understand. I’m beginning to see that these stories are all about coming unto Christ. Throughout the book, we are given one example after another. Each story is a little different, and every individual has their unique set of obstacles and challenges. It’s their differences that teach us the invitation to come unto Christ is open to all.

“He inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile” 2 Nephi 26:33.

It’s almost like God is saying, “You can make it. I’ve given you all these examples, so you know it is possible even for you. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’ve been. I’m inviting you to come unto me.”

Riches and Parenting Problems

Riches usually create a major obstacle when coming unto the Lord Mark 10:24-25; and Lehi was a wealthy man 1 Nephi 3:16. He also had some big parenting problems. You might say his family was dysfunctional. There was so much resentment and anger that two of his children wanted to kill him 1 Nephi 2:13.

But notwithstanding the difficulties, Lehi became a witness for “he saw the heavens open . . . he saw One descending out of the midst of heaven, and he beheld that his luster was above that of the sun at noon-day. . . his whole heart was filled, because of the things which he had seen, yea, which the Lord had shown unto him 1 Nephi 1:8-15.

Age Requirement

God hasn’t set a minimum age requirement for witnesses. Young children and teenagers can become witnesses of Christ, for Jacob saw Jesus in his youth.

“Wherefore, I know that thou art redeemed, because of the righteousness of thy Redeemer; for thou hast beheld that in the fulness of time he cometh to bring salvation unto men. And thou hast beheld in thy youth his glory; wherefore, thou art blessed even as they unto whom he shall minister in the flesh . . .” 2 Nephi 2:3-4 “And my brother, Jacob, also has seen him [Redeemer] as I have seen him . . .” 2 Nephi 11:2-3

Priestly Authority

Overcoming pride is challenging, especially for those who are given a little authority, as they suppose. “Hence many are called, but few are chosen.” D&C 121:34-40 Alma was a wicked priest and caught up in the corruption and self-importance that is often found among religious leaders and those who are in possession of the priestly line of authority Mosiah 12:25-30.

When a man is given a leadership position, he might imagine that he is the only one authorized to speak for the Lord. It might not occur to him that God can send and authorize an obscure, unknown messenger to call the leader to repentance Mosiah 11:27.

To Alma’s credit, he wasn’t angry about Abinadi’s chastisement. He recognized God’s message, and he repented Mosiah 17:2. The Lord blessed him for his humility. “Blessed art thou, Alma, . . . because of thy exceeding faith in the words alone of my servant Abinadi. . . Thou art my servant; and I covenant with thee that thou shalt have eternal life; and thou shalt serve me and go forth in my name, and shalt gather together my sheep” Mosiah 26:15-20.

Rebellious

The Lord even wants the rowdy and unruly to come unto Him. Alma the younger had a righteous father, but he was a wicked and an idolatrous man. He sought to destroy the church of God and lead the people of the Lord astray. He was openly rebellious Mosiah 27:8-10. But even one like Alma can repent and become a witness of God.

“And now, for three days and for three nights was I racked, even with the pains of a damned soul. . . I remembered also to have heard my father prophesy unto the people concerning the coming of one Jesus Christ, a Son of God, to atone for the sins of the world. . . I cried within my heart: O Jesus, thou Son of God, have mercy on me. . . I could remember my pains no more . . . Yea, methought I saw, even as our father Lehi saw, God sitting upon his throne, surrounded with numberless concourses of angels, in the attitude of singing and praising their God; yea, and my soul did long to be there. . . I had been born of God. . . For because of the word which he has imparted unto me, behold, many have been born of God, and have tasted as I have tasted, and have seen eye to eye as I have seen; therefore they do know of these things of which I have spoken, as I do know; and the knowledge which I have is of God” Alma 36:16-26.

Sinful and Murderous

Christ is able and willing to forgive sin. King Lamoni and his people had committed many sins and murders and considered themselves the most lost of all mankind. “And now behold, my brethren, since it has been all that we could do (as we were the most lost of all mankind) to repent of all our sins and the many murders which we have committed, and to get God to take them away from our hearts, for it was all we could do to repent sufficiently before God that he would take away our stain” Alma 24:11. Alma 18:5-6

Yet, even this wicked king became an eyewitness of Christ. “For as sure as thou livest, behold, I have seen my Redeemer; and he shall come forth, and be born of a woman, and he shall redeem all mankind who believe on his name. Now, when he had said these words, his heart was swollen within him, and he sunk again with joy; and the queen also sunk down, being overpowered by the Spirit” Alma 19:13.

The Book of Mormon was “Written by way of commandment, and also by the spirit of prophecy and of revelation. . . to the convincing of the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God, manifesting himself unto all nations.” He will manifest himself unto you. “Verily, thus saith the Lord: It shall come to pass that every soul who forsaketh his sins and cometh unto me, and calleth on my name, and obeyeth my voice, and keepeth my commandments, shall see my face and know that I am;” D&C 93:1.

The Lord is looking for witnesses. The world needs more of them. He’s inviting us to come and see for ourselves. What are we going to do with the invitation?

Looking for Witnesses of Christ, Part 3

Studying the scriptures is like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. All the pieces are needed to see the whole picture. Each witness of Christ helps us understand different pieces of the puzzle. Very few of them are commissioned to tell the whole story 3 Nephi 23:1-2. Christ gives instructions as to what they can and cannot say 1 Nephi 14:24-26. Much of what they share overlaps and builds upon what another has said.

Because of the many individual witnesses of Christ contained in the Book of Mormon, the whole book becomes a powerful witness of Christ. The doctrine of Christ is laid out. Eyewitnesses share their struggles and how they overcame through the power of the atonement. The deception of an anti-Christ is also presented. Results of wickedness and righteousness are clearly exposed. We are also shown how most of us, as gentiles, will reject Christ in these latter-days. 3 Nephi 16:10-14, 2 Nephi 30:1, 2 Nephi 28:32

We still have an opportunity to accept Christ and come unto him. Witnesses of Jesus can teach and help us as we seek to also become witnesses. Let’s look at some of the experiences and commonalities among witnesses in the Book of Mormon. There are many examples. Here are just a few:

  • There is a time of trying and testing before the witness of Christ is obtained.

Nephi was commanded to go and get the plates of brass. Laban tried to kill him, he was beaten by his brothers, and rescued by an angel 1 Nephi 3. He was also required to slay Laban. He had never killed a man and recounts, “I shrunk and would that I might not slay him” 1 Nephi 4. His brothers bound him with cords and left him to be devoured by wild beasts in the wilderness 1 Nephi 7.

  • The challenges don’t stop after one becomes an eyewitness.

Nephi and Lehi, the sons of Helaman, were cast into prison for many days without food. The Lamanites went forth into the prison to take them that they might slay them Helaman 5:21-22.

After prophesying about the murder of their chief judge Helaman 8:26-28, Nephi was accused of being an accomplice to the murder. He was cast into prison Helaman 9:1-41.

Although the Lord allows his witnesses to be tried, tested, and persecuted; “I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance.” 1 Nephi 1:20

This does not mean that all of God’s witnesses will be spared alive. For some are required to seal the truth of their words by laying down their life. “And now, when Abinadi had said these words, he fell, having suffered death by fire; yea, having been put to death because he would not deny the commandments of God, having sealed the truth of his words by his death.” Mosiah 17:20

  • No unclean thing can dwell in the presence of God Moses 6:57. Before coming into His presence, He forgives your sins and redeems you from the fall.

“But behold, the Lord hath redeemed my soul from hell; I [Lehi] have beheld his glory, and I am encircled about eternally in the arms of his love” 2 Nephi 1:15.

“And I will tell you of the wrestle which I had before God, before I received a remission of my sins. . . And there came a voice unto me, saying: Enos, thy sins are forgiven thee” Enos 1:2, 5.

“For, said he, I [Alma the Younger] have repented of my sins, and have been redeemed of the Lord; behold I am born of the Spirit” Mosiah 27:24.

“I [Nephi] glory in plainness; I glory in truth; I glory in my Jesus, for he hath redeemed my soul from hell” 2 Nephi 33:6.

  • Witnesses see Jesus Christ and speak to Him face to face.

“The Lord showed himself unto him [Brother of Jared], and said: Because thou knowest these things ye are redeemed from the fall; therefore ye are brought back into my presence; therefore I show myself unto you. Ether 3:13

“And then shall ye know that I [Moroni] have seen Jesus, and that he hath talked with me face to face, and that he told me in plain humility, even as a man telleth another in mine own language, concerning these things;” Ether 12:39

“I [Nephi] spake unto him as a man speaketh; for I beheld that he was in the form of a man; yet nevertheless, I knew that it was the Spirit of the Lord; and he spake unto me as a man speaketh with another.” 1 Nephi 11:11

  • Witnesses not only see Christ face to face, but they view his birth, life, ministry, death, and resurrection. They are witnesses of his life’s mission.

“The virgin whom thou seest is the mother of the Son of God . . . I looked and beheld the virgin again, bearing a child in her arms. . . the Lamb of God went forth and was baptized of him; and after he was baptized, I beheld the heavens open, and the Holy Ghost come down out of heaven and abide upon him in the form of a dove. . . he went forth ministering unto the people, in power and great glory; and the multitudes were gathered together to hear him; and I beheld that they cast him out from among them. . . And I, Nephi, saw that he was lifted up upon the cross and slain for the sins of the world” 1 Nephi 11:13-33.

“Wherefore, we would to God that we could persuade all men not to rebel against God, to provoke him to anger, but that all men would believe in Christ, and view his death, and suffer his cross and bear the shame of the world; wherefore, I, Jacob, take it upon me to fulfil the commandment of my brother Nephi” Jacob 1:8.

  • “The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” Revelation 19:10. When Jesus redeems you from the fall by His own testimony, he also allows you to see the past, present, and future. Thus you can prophecy because you’ve seen it yourself.

“And we, ourselves, also, through the infinite goodness of God, and the manifestations of his Spirit, have great views of that which is to come; and were it expedient, we could prophesy of all things.” Mosiah 5:3

“And when the Lord had said these words, he showed unto the brother of Jared all the inhabitants of the earth which had been, and also all that would be; and he withheld them not from his sight, even unto the ends of the earth” Ether 3:25.

“And behold, the things which this apostle of the Lamb [John the Revelator] shall write are many things which thou [Nephi] hast seen; and behold, the remainder shalt thou see” 1 Nephi 14:24.

“The first came and stood before my father, and gave unto him a book, and bade him that he should read. And it came to pass that as he read, he was filled with the Spirit of the Lord. And he read, saying: Wo, wo, unto Jerusalem, for I have seen thine abominations . . .” 1 Nephi 1:11-13

“Behold, I speak unto you as if ye were present, and yet ye are not. But behold, Jesus Christ hath shown you unto me, and I know your doing” Mormon 8:35.

  • Witnesses are given an assignment to teach and prophesy 2 Nephi 32:6.

“Therefore, I would that ye should know, that after the Lord had shown so many marvelous things unto my father, Lehi, yea, concerning the destruction of Jerusalem, behold he went forth among the people, and began to prophesy and to declare unto them concerning the things which he had both seen and heard” 1 Nephi 1:18.

“Blessed art thou, Nephi, for those things which thou hast done; for I have beheld how thou hast with unwearyingness declared the word, which I have given unto thee, unto this people. And thou hast not feared them, and hast not sought thine own life, but hast sought my will, and to keep my commandments” Helaman 10:4.

“And it came to pass that after the space of two years that Abinadi came among them in disguise, that they knew him not, and began to prophesy among them, saying: Thus has the Lord commanded me, saying—Abinadi, go and prophesy unto this my people, for they have hardened their hearts against my words; they have repented not of their evil doings; therefore, I will visit them in my anger, yea, in my fierce anger will I visit them in their iniquities and abominations” Mosiah 12:1.

  • Witnesses of Jesus Christ are filled with God’s love, which he hath bestowed upon all who are true followers of his Son, Jesus Christ that they may become the sons of God Moroni 7:48. Having obtained this love, they are filled with compassion and love for their fellowmen and make intercession for the people.

“Now they were desirous that salvation should be declared to every creature, for they could not bear that any human soul should perish; yea, even the very thoughts that any soul should endure endless torment did cause them to quake and tremble” Mosiah 28:3.

“Wherefore it came to pass that my father, Lehi, as he went forth prayed unto the Lord, yea, even with all his heart, in behalf of his people” 1 Nephi 1:5.

“ . . . I began to feel a desire for the welfare of my brethren, the Nephites; wherefore, I did pour out my whole soul unto God for them. . . And after I, Enos, had heard these words, my faith began to be unshaken in the Lord; and I prayed unto him with many long strugglings for my brethren, the Lamanites. . .” Enos 1:9-18

“And now, O Lord, wilt thou turn away thine anger, and try again if they will serve thee? And if so, O Lord, thou canst bless them according to thy words which thou hast said” Helaman 11:16.

Although witnesses of Christ have many similarities, they have different personalities, backgrounds, and life experiences. It’s their differences that teach us the invitation to come unto Christ is open to all. What can we learn from their differences? What hope does it give a sinner like me?

To be continued . . .

Birthday of My Queen

On days both dark and sunny

Jennifer is my precious and loving honey

To me her birthday is a special day

I hope it brings her joy in every way

Such happy times we share

Few things could ever compare

Each year our bond just seems to grow

And she makes me happy, you know

We've been in love for quite a while

And she seems to always share a smile

With deep blue eyes of light

She gives me much delight

I find her so very cute

With absolutely no dispute

Each day she walks to exercise

And then we often romanticize

Our love is deep and often shown

A fantastic family we have grown

Too many children, some may say

But they just came anyway

She is a very special friend of mine

Who walks a nearly perfect line

She offers love and support to me

And reminds me what I'm to be

When I feel a little bit sad

She has a way to make me glad

She simply just appears

To wipe away my tears

If I have a disappointment

With me she makes an appointment

Throughout the many years

She has helped to ease my fears

She is a woman of faith, no doubt

A useless point to debate about

She firmly claims her mind and will

Determined her mission to fulfill

When another tries to push or shove

To alter sacred doctrines from above

She has a way to be straight and clear

And speak the truth without fear

She is not the type to surrender to evil

But does her best to be civil

The arrogant, pompous, and pushy

Just seem to be far too mushy

Sometimes accused of doing wrong

Or being a little headstrong

It’s not her nature to be formal

Some say, “Just be normal”

Come hear our brilliant and perfect precept

For surely you must accept

We claim the power to condemn and save

Authority to us God gave

She’s willing to consider a recommendation

But requires a reasonable explanation

Please, kindly me persuade

And just stop the masquerade

She hates to be a fake

And seeks to stay awake

To escape the pit and mire

And do all the Lord may require

My sweetheart with pure intent

Is not easy to be bent

She’s a woman with desire

To receive the full and burning fire

Refusing to bow and say, “Yes sir”

Often, causes a great big stir

When wolves speak in the name of the Lamb

She promptly rejects them, by damn

Only in God, will she place her trust

And obey Him as she must

She chooses His pathway bright

And daily receives more light

God softly speaks from time to time

To present a new paradigm

Her heart has often grown and changed

As beliefs are being rearranged

Determined to ascend God's mountain

And partake of the everlasting fountain

She is overcoming confusion and strife

As she seeks Eternal life

Today is the birthday of my queen

On the path to be pure and clean

A precious and lovely queen to me

And a divine mother of love to be

I Love You Sweetheart

Happy Birthday
